Charter Fishing FAQ

Image

Q: What’s the best charter boat to book this time of year?

A: There are several different types of charters here each with their own style and personality. Can you share a little bit about who will be fishing including ages, experience, and where you’ll be staying during your visit? (Reference the Charter Fast Facts found here to match them with a charter experience that best suits their group.)

Q: What kind of fish are we going to catch?

A: What you’ll catch varies by season and where you’re fishing. Check out Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website and the Fish Rules app. Together they both share great info on seasons and limits. Here are the links:
https://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/ and
https://fishrulesapp.com/.

Q: Are the waves really choppy and rough? We’re worried about getting sea sick.

A: While the Gulf is typically calm, you will rock a bit when you stop to fish. To be safe you may want to consider taking motion sickness medications the night before your trip and morning of. As an alternative to the Gulf, you can also fish on the Bay which tends to be relatively flat.

Q: What should we bring?

A: Check in with your Captain to see what’s on board as often times they will have a cooler with ice for your use. Generally be sure to bring along non-spray sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, snacks, and more water than you think you’ll need.

Q: Do I need a license to fish on a charter?

A: No, you will be covered under the charter license and no other state license is required.

Q: How much does a charter cost?

A: Charter costs vary based on how long you’re planning to head out for and the type of boat. A 2-hour charter on a smaller center console can run a little over $400 while longer trips that are 6+ hours are around $1800. A 20% tip to the Captain and/or crew is customary.

Q: How much should I tip the crew?

A: A 20% tip to the Captain and/or crew is customary.

Q: Is there a fuel charge?

A: No extra charge for fuel – it’s all included.

Q: Do we need to bring equipment?

A: Charter captains and crew have an assortment of rods and reels that are well maintained and ready to fish a variety of species. All tackle (line weights, hooks, etc.) is included and if the crew doesn’t bring bait on board it’s likely you’ll be catching some on the way out which is part of the experience!

Q: What’s the difference between federal waters and state waters?

A: A federal permit allows boats to fish 9+ miles offshore.

Q: What’s a 6-pack?

A: A “6-pack’ refers to a boat that is Coast Guard approved to carry up to 6 passengers.

Q: We are looking to fish with X People. What are our options?

A: There are several charters that can accommodate your group and also larger boats like American Spirit and Pelican Adventures that offer group trips. (Check Fast Facts for additional details.)

Q: How long is a charter?

A: It varies based on your preference. There are trips that start at 2 hours to get your family feeling comfortable out on the water or you can stretch to half-day adventures. Keep in mind not all charters leave at sunrise. For example, a 6-hour trip can run in the morning or the afternoon.

Q: How early do charters leave?

A: It depends on what you arrange with your Captain. They will let you know the best times to head out based on tides and your preferences. Keep in mind there are morning and afternoon trips to best fit your family’s schedule.

Q: How far in advance do we need to book?

A: I’d advise to book as far out as possible however always check with the Captains if you’re coming sooner as they sometimes have last minute openings.

Q: Can we keep what we catch?

A: If your catch meets regulations then you can absolutely keep your fish. In fact, your Captain or deckhand will likely filet it for you to take to a local restaurant that offers “cook your catch” like East Pass Seafood & Oyster House, Broula’s, Harbor Docks, or Dewey Destins.

Q: I reached out to CAPTAIN NAME and haven’t heard back. What should we do?

A: Often times Captains are offshore with limited service so it’s quite possible they just haven’t received your message yet. (Gather additional information such as when they’re arriving and when they reached out so you can assess whether it’s necessary to intervene.)

Q: Are there any charter boats that are handicap accessible?

A: Some of the larger group charters can assist bringing a wheelchair onboard but please note it must be manual as powered wheelchairs and scooters can be compromised on the wet boat deck. I’d advise you contact the Captain directly and see if they might be able to accommodate.
